How Many MTG Proxies Fit on a Page? 9-Card Layouts, Letter vs A4, and Margins

A reliable proxy print setup depends on four things matching: the PDF page size, the paper loaded in the printer, the paper size selected in the driver, and a print scale of 100%. If one changes, a mathematically correct nine-card sheet can produce undersized cards, clipped edges, or a printer dialog that quietly “helps” by shrinking everything.

The common answer is that nine MTG proxies fit on a page in a 3×3 layout. The better answer is that nine trim-size cards fit within the raw dimensions of both Letter and A4 paper, but margins, gutters, crop marks, and bleed determine whether the sheet is practical on your printer.

Start with the final card size

A traditional Magic-size card is approximately 2.5 × 3.5 inches, or about 63 × 88 mm depending on how the dimensions are rounded. That is the trim size: the intended physical footprint after cutting. For a deeper dimensions and resolution reference, use the MTG proxy card size guide.

Nine trim-size cards arranged as three columns and three rows occupy 7.5 × 10.5 inches. That calculation contains no spacing: three cards × 2.5 inches gives 7.5 inches across, while three cards × 3.5 inches gives 10.5 inches down.

Orientation matters. The usual nine-up layout places cards upright on a portrait page. Rotating the page or individual cards changes which dimension becomes the constraint, so verify the PDF orientation instead of relying on the thumbnail in the print dialog.

Know the space each print term consumes

Several different areas tend to get bundled together as “margins,” which makes troubleshooting harder than it needs to be.

  • Trim size is the finished card boundary. For a standard proxy, this is approximately 2.5 × 3.5 inches.
  • Bleed is artwork extending beyond the trim line so slight cutting variation does not leave an unintended white edge. LetsProxy’s file guidance recommends 0.125 inch, or about 3 mm, per edge for full-bleed work.
  • Safe area is the region where essential text, mana costs, and other important content should stay away from the cut edge.
  • Gutter is the intentional space between neighboring cards. It can make cutting easier, but every gutter makes the grid larger.
  • Crop marks show where cuts should occur. They need clear space to remain visible and useful.
  • Printable area is the portion of the sheet that a particular printer and driver can actually mark. It may be smaller than the physical paper.

There is no universal safe margin or gutter for every home printer. Printable area varies with the printer, driver, paper setting, and sometimes the selected media type. Build around measurements from your own test sheet rather than assuming that a generic quarter-inch margin will work everywhere.

Letter versus A4 for a nine-card sheet

US Letter measures 8.5 × 11 inches. A4 measures 210 × 297 mm, approximately 8.27 × 11.69 inches. The ISO 216 paper-size standard defines the A-series dimensions.

The first row explains why nine-up sheets are common. On Letter, the remaining space can theoretically be divided into 0.5 inch at the left and right and 0.25 inch at the top and bottom. On A4, there is less horizontal room but considerably more vertical room. These are page-edge calculations, not guaranteed printable margins.

Adding 0.125-inch gutters between cards increases the grid to 7.75 × 10.75 inches. Letter then has only 0.25 inch of total vertical room, or 0.125 inch at each end if centered. That may be insufficient once crop marks and the printer’s unprintable edge are considered.

A4 is friendlier vertically, but its narrower width can become the limiting factor. The practical question is therefore not merely “Does the grid fit on the paper?” It is “Does the grid fit inside the printable area without automatic scaling?”

Why full bleed complicates a 3×3 layout

A 2.5 × 3.5-inch card with 0.125 inch of bleed on all four sides has a 2.75 × 3.75-inch canvas. Placing nine separate canvases in a 3×3 grid produces an 8.25 × 11.25-inch footprint before adding gutters, crop marks, or page margins.

That footprint is too tall for Letter. It fits within A4’s raw dimensions by only about 0.02 inch across, leaving essentially no useful horizontal margin. In practice, it is not a robust home-print layout unless the production method intentionally handles shared bleed, trimming, and the printer’s printable-area limits.

This distinction matters: bleed belongs outside the finished trim line, but a nine-up sheet does not necessarily need nine isolated card canvases with a full gap of bleed around each one. Professional imposition workflows may share cut boundaries or arrange artwork differently. For a basic home proxy print setup, do not add individual bleed around every card and then let the printer shrink the oversized result. That preserves the sheet while changing the cards, which is exactly backward.

Export the PDF with the intended page size

A PDF can look correct on screen while carrying the wrong physical page dimensions. Before printing, inspect the PDF’s document properties or page information and confirm that it says Letter or A4 as intended. Also confirm portrait orientation and check that no card crosses the page boundary.

  1. Set the design document to the final paper size: Letter or A4.
  2. Place the 3×3 grid at the intended trim dimensions.
  3. Add only the gutters, crop marks, or shared bleed the cutting workflow actually requires.
  4. Keep important card content inside a safe area and away from cut lines.
  5. Export directly to PDF without resizing the page during export.
  6. Open the finished PDF in a dedicated PDF viewer and verify its reported page size.

Avoid treating Letter and A4 as interchangeable. If an A4 PDF is sent to a printer configured for Letter, or vice versa, the software may crop the page or offer to scale it. Switching the paper selection without rebuilding the layout does not create extra room; it changes the relationship between the document and the physical sheet.

Use Actual Size or 100% in the printer dialog

Adobe defines Actual Size as printing without scaling. Fit can enlarge or reduce a PDF page to fit the printer’s selected printable area. Shrink Oversized Pages reduces a page that exceeds the selected paper, while Custom Scale applies the percentage entered by the user. Adobe’s PDF page-sizing instructions show where these controls appear in Acrobat.

For correctly prepared proxy sheets, select Actual Size or 100%. Do not select Fit simply because the preview looks tidy. Fit to page has ruined more carefully sized print sheets than it has any right to.

Scaling changes the physical card dimensions by the same percentage. A 2.5-inch-wide card printed at 95% becomes 2.375 inches wide. A full sheet can still look proportional and sharp while every card is wrong for sleeves.

Run a one-sheet calibration test

Print one page before sending a 100-card deck. Use the same PDF viewer, printer, paper selection, orientation, and scaling settings intended for the final run. A calibration sheet should answer four questions:

  1. Does one printed card measure approximately 2.5 × 3.5 inches at its trim boundary?
  2. Is the complete 3×3 grid present, without clipping at the top, bottom, or sides?
  3. Is there enough space to see and use the crop marks or cut boundaries?
  4. After trimming, does the test card sit consistently behind a standard card in the sleeve you plan to use?

If the card is too small, first inspect the scale percentage and disable Fit or Shrink. If the card is the correct size but an outer edge is clipped, the grid exceeds the printer’s printable area. The fix is to revise the layout, reduce optional gutters or marks, use a compatible paper size, or print fewer cards per page. Do not solve clipping by shrinking cards unless a nonstandard final size is genuinely acceptable.

If horizontal measurements are correct but vertical measurements are not, confirm that the application did not stretch the PDF or apply a mismatched paper conversion. Ordinary print scaling should preserve proportions; unequal distortion points to a document, export, or driver problem.

Keep the printout appropriate for its use

Home-printed proxies are useful for deck testing, cubes, Commander experimentation, and casual play where the group permits them. Clearly identifying playtest cards also prevents them from being confused with authentic cards.

Player-created proxies are generally not permitted in sanctioned Magic events. Tournament officials may issue tournament proxies in limited circumstances covered by the Magic Tournament Rules. The reliable nine-card workflow

A 3×3 sheet is a sensible starting point, not a promise that every printer can handle the same margins. Begin with the 7.5 × 10.5-inch trim grid, choose Letter or A4 deliberately, and add spacing only after accounting for the printer’s printable area. Export the PDF at that exact page size, print at Actual Size or 100%, and measure one card.

If the test sheet fails, adjust the layout rather than accepting automatic scaling. That small preflight step is less exciting than assembling a Commander deck, but it is considerably more exciting than discovering that all 100 cards are 5% too small after cutting them.
